A method is described in which tissue excised from cotyledons of 10-day-old pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L. ‘Alabama Gold’) seedlings is floated in the light on a phosphate-based medium suspected of containing a photosynthesis inhibitor. The discs sink in a few hours if photosynthesis is inhibited; otherwise they continue to float. The method is capable of detecting a 0.002 to 0.02 ppm concentration of the herbicide prometryne [2,4-bis(isopropylamino)-6-(methylthio)-s-triazine]. The method could be used both for screening chemicals for potential herbicide use and for monitoring water for pollution by photosynthesis inhibitors.

The effects on leucine uptake and its incorporation into protein by cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. ‘Ashley’) cotyledon tissue following treatments with 2,4-bis(isopropylamino)-6-(methylthio)-s-triazine (prometryne) were determined. Prometryne decreased 14C-leucine uptake both in the light and in the dark. Prometryne decreased leucine incorporation into protein only when the discs were also exposed to over 4 hr of light. Percent of absorbed leucine incorporated into protein was increased by a 4 hr exposure in the light to 10−4M prometryne following a 24-hr dark exposure to this same concentration. Similar exposure to 10~5M prometryne had no effect. Percent of leucine incorporated into protein was decreased by 10-5M prometryne following a 24 hr exposure to this same concentration in the light. However, under these conditions 10−4M prometryne had no effect. It is speculated that the increased percentage of leucine incorporated into protein may be related to increased availability of the absorbed leucine for use in protein synthesis rather than an effect of the herbicide on the rate of protein synthesis

The data show that an increase in government provided old-age pensions is strongly correlated with a reduction in fertility. What type of model is consistent with this finding? We explore this question using two models of fertility, the one by Barro and Becker (1989), and the one inspired by Caldwell and developed by Boldrin and Jones (2002). In the Barro and Becker model parents have children because they perceive their children’s lives as a continuation of their own. In the Boldrin and Jones’ framework parents procreate because the children care about their old parents’ utility, and thus provide them with old age transfers. The effect of increases in government provided pensions on fertility in the Barro and Becker model is very small, and inconsistent with the empirical findings. The effect on fertility in the Boldrin and Jones model is sizeable and accounts for between 55 and 65% of the observed Europe–US fertility differences both across countries and across time and over 80% of the observed variation seen in a broad cross section of countries. Another key factor affecting fertility the Boldrin and Jones model is the access to capital markets, which can account for the other half of the observed change in fertility in developed countries over the last 70 years.

We study the large observed changes in labor supply by married women in the United States over the post-World War II period, a period that saw little change in the labor supply by single women. We investigate the effects of changes in the gender wage gap, the quantitative impact of technological improvements in the production of nonmarket goods, and the potential inferiority of nonmarket goods in explaining the dramatic change in labor supply. We find that small decreases in the gender wage gap can simultaneously explain the significant increases in the average hours worked by married women and the relative constancy in the hours worked by single women and by single and married men. We also find that the impact of technological improvements in the household on married female hours and on the relative wage of females to males is too small for realistic values. Some specifications of the inferiority of home goods match the hours patterns, but they have counterfactual predictions for wages and expenditure patterns.

This note provides a formal justification for the Friedman and Savage nonconcavity in the utility of money. This is based on the possibility of indivisibilities in the consumption possibilities set. A precise characterization of when gambling is optimal (and the optimal type) is provided in one special case. Some possible limitations are considered.

Objective: To determine the risk of the lesser variant (or PDD-like traits) in the biological and nonbiological second- and third-degree relatives of PDD probands using a screening questionnaire and to investigate the extent to which the risk of the lesser variant differs according to various characteristics of the proband. Method: The sample consists of a series of 34 nuclear families with 2 affected PDD children (multiplex, MPX), 44 families with a single PDD child (simplex, SPX), and 14 families who adopted a PDD child. Data on characteristics of the lesser variant in 1362 biological and 337 nonbiological second- and third-degree relatives were collected from parents by telephone interview and from several maternal and paternal relatives by questionnaire. Results: All components of the lesser variant were more common in biological relatives (BR) than nonbiological relatives (NBR), confirming the familial aggregation of the traits. Proband characteristics associated with an increased risk of the lesser variant in relatives were a higher level of functioning and coming from a MPX family. Conclusions: These findings on the familial aggregation of the lesser variant suggest that the genes for PDD also confer susceptibility to the lesser variant and that PDD may be a genetically heterogeneous disorder.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
Consider a small underdeveloped country. A new government is empowered and is looking for advice on how to speed the process of development. How might this government affect the quantity and types of foreign investment attracted through the explicit choice of its policies? Should they encourage this investment? Discourage it? Could and should this be done through explicit tax and spending policies? How would a policy of erecting tariff barriers to keep out imports of consumption goods affect their process of development? Should they undertake such a policy?
Does a government's “social security” policy adversely affect the incentives for private saving and the formation of capital? Should policies be adjusted because of this?
Is there “too much” trading in financial assets? Are the prices that these assets trade at too volatile? Should governments adopt explicit policies (such as transaction taxes) designed to reduce either the quantity of trading or the movements of prices in these markets?
Consider a one-dimensional beach along which bathers are uniformly distributed (more generally, a continuum of potential varieties and consumers with varying tastes). A local entrepreneur is considering opening a snack bar. Where along the beach should he locate? What if there are several entrepreneurs all competing for the same clientele, where will they locate? How would an omniscient social planner choose the locations and number of snack bars and how would this compare with the non-cooperative solution arrived at by the entrepreneurs? Should the government enter the picture and regulate entry and/or location of new snack bars? What should antitrust policy look like in this environment? Should something akin to patents be granted in this case? If so, for how long should they last?
